The relentless tick of the kitchen clock seemed to mock Eleanor's sluggish movements as she attempted to assemble dinner. Her fingers moved with a listless quality, the knife almost slipping from her grasp. Her daughter, Chloe, bounced into the room, practically vibrating with energy. "Mom, you'll never guess! Mrs. Gable is my science teacher! Isn't that wild?"

Eleanor’s hand froze mid-chop. Mrs. Gable. The woman who had consistently graded her lab reports with a critical eye, the woman who instilled in her a deep-seated fear of anything related to biology. A wave of exhaustion washed over her.

“That’s…wonderful, honey,” Eleanor managed, her voice barely above a whisper. The weight of that shared connection, the implication of endless parent-teacher conferences and science fairs, felt insurmountable. She felt her chest constricting, the desire to simply retreat and not deal with anything, pressing down on her.
